This is a theoretical thesis about crowdfunding, its possibilities, and future predictions. Crowdfunding is a modern form of financing that is based on small investments from a large audience. The thesis provides a basic introduction to the four different types of crowdfunding; both how it works, its history and regulations. In addition, there is an introduction to the process of starting a business to understand how crowdfunding can be used. The thesis is thereafter specialized towards equity crowdfunding. This is the type of crowdfunding that is based on the entrepreneur raising capital by selling unlisted shares to a large audience, as opposed to traditionally using only a few investors. This has several benefits and is the type of crowdfunding that has the greatest potential. Therefore, I have chosen to investigate whether equity crowdfunding will be a larger source of financing than venture capital for startups in the near future. Since there is rapid development in the industry, it was important that my sources were as up to date as possible and that the articles were written by experts in the field. Therefore, I collected data from two informants from two businesses: A Norwegian analyst who works in a financial holding company in New York and an entrepreneur from a Norwegian startup. They will share relevant experience from their work and how they predict future developments. In addition, information has been obtained from professional articles, and the Norwegian Crowdfunding Association. The findings show what challenges and opportunities that exist today and what needs to be changed to create growth to reach its potential. The findings show that equity crowdfunding can increase tremendously, but there are limitations that creates a ceiling. Based on the theory and data obtained, I will end the thesis by answering to my problem and making my prediction about the development.
