Abstract
This master’s thesis researches which discourses of writing students in grades 1st-7th are invited to write within, based on the Norwegian curriculum and written tasks made for this curriculum by the workbook Fabel. The thesis is based on Ivanič (2004) attempt at differentiating between six different discourses of writing, which will have influence on how we work with writing in the classroom. In other words, the main purpose of this thesis is to be able to say something about which discourses of writing students in grades 1st-7th should work with in their Norwegian subject according to “Fagfornyelsen”, how these discourses of writing are interpreted in a frequently used workbook, and to which degree there is concordance between discourses of writing in the curriculum and this workbook. Based on the purpose of this thesis, I have created a research design where I use a qualitative method. I have chosen to use discourse analysis as a starting point for analyzing the various texts which make up the primary material for the thesis. To be able to answer the thesis question, I have done a discourse analysis of core texts about writing in the curriculum and of the competence aims in the Norwegian subject for grades 1st-7th. In addition, I have done a discourse analysis of written tasks in the coursebook Fabel for grades 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th (Workbooks for grades 4th, 6th, and 7th were not yet published when this thesis was written). In this material I have exclusively examined parts of text in the curriculum which pertain to writing. In the workbooks, I have differentiated between what I define as a written task and instrumental gap-filling tasks.
I found that all the six discourses of writing described by Ivanič (2004) were represented in the core text parts in the curriculum. However, only four of the discourses were shown to be represented in competence aims for grades 1st-7th. I found that both the genre discourse, the creativity discourse, and the skills discourse were equally represented in competence aims for grades 2nd, 4th, and 7th, respectively. When students start their intermediate stage (grades 5th-7th), they are introduced to the process discourse in competence aims which are part of the Norwegian subject. In the written tasks in the Fabel workbook, tasks within the genre discourse and creativity discourse were shown to be the main emphasis for grades 1st and 2nd. For grades 3rd-5th, the genre discourse was still well represented, while the number of tasks within the creativity discourse was cut drastically. Written tasks within the skills discourse, social practices discourse, and the sociopolitical discourse were represented far less in the written tasks, while the process discourse appeared to be represented in workbooks for the intermediate stage.
