Barn og foreldres erfaringer når et barn blir nydiagnostisert med diabetes mellitus type

Abstract

Bakgrunn: I Norge har 28 000 nordmenn diabetes, deriblant får 300 barn årlig denne diagnosen i Norge. Norge er på verdenstoppen når det gjelder barnediabetes, noe som gjør at det bør bli økt fokus på sykdommen. Hensikt: Hensikten med oppgaven var å belyse barn med nyoppdaget diabetes mellitus type 1 innlagt på sykehus og deres foreldre sine erfaringer. Metode: Denne oppgaven ble basert på en systematisk litteraturstudie som tar utgangpunkt i 8 forskningsartikler om temaet. Det er benyttet 8 kvalitative forskningsartikler som baserer seg på barn og foreldres erfaringer når barnet får nyoppdaget diabetes. Artiklene har blitt vurdert ut fra kvalitet, etiske hensyn, oppbygging og relevans for problemstilling. Videre har artiklene blitt analysert og funn identifisert. Resultat: Barn og deres foreldre opplever hovedsakelig negative emosjonelle reaksjoner når barnet blir diagnostisert med diabetes. Håndteringen av sykdommen er i starten utfordrende, men med god informasjon og undervisning, følelsesmessig støtte og trygghet fra helsepersonell skaper dette økt mestring til å kunne takle diabetes og dets håndtering. Konklusjon: Sykepleiers holdninger, omsorg og kunnskap har mye å si for hvordan barna og foreldrene opplever og erfarer sykehusoppholdet. Det å skape et positivt førsteinntrykk blant avdelingen og personalet kan være avgjørende for hvordan samarbeidet mellom barna og deres foreldre blir.

Background: In Norway 28,000 people have diabetes, and each year 300 children get the disease. This statistics makes Norway to one of the worst in the world in terms of childhood diabetes. In order to improve this statistics, Norway should increase their focus on the problem. Aim: The objective of this thesis is to throw light on children with recently discovered diabetes mellitus type 1 that are hospitalized, and also highlight their parents´ experiences. Method: This thesis is based on a systematic literature study, which again is based on 8 different research article. These articles focus on the experiences of children and their parents when the child is diagnosed with newly diagnosed diabetes. The articles have all been evaluated based on the following criteria: text structure, overall quality, ethical point of view, and relevance to the topic. Furthermore the articles have been analysed and findings have been identified. Result: Children and their parents mainly experience negative emotional reactions when the child is diagnosed with diabetes. In the beginning it’s difficult for the child and its parents to deal with the disease, but with good information and education on the subject, and emotional support from health personal, it becomes easier for the child and its parents to deal with the situation. Conclusion: The attitude, behaviour, care and control, and knowledge level of the nurse is highly important in terms of how the child and its parents experience the hospital stay. Giving the child and its parents a positive first impression of the hospital department and its personnel can also be crucial with respect to how they experience the stay.
