Abstract
This thesis is focused on the system identification of a new magnetorheological damper for a Formula Student race car with a decoupled roll-heave suspension. The system identification consisted of setting up a representable test and gathering data before making a model of this data. The test was conducted with an Instron E10000 fatigue test machine impersonating a damper dynamometer. The thesis also suggests a model predictive controller to generate force references to the dampers based on a newly developed vertical full car model with a decoupled roll-heave suspension. The implementation shows promise, but adequate testing has not been completed. At last, a Kalman filter used for damper velocity estimation is implemented and tested in simulation. The preliminary results are positive, but a real-world test is still to be conducted. The thesis ends with some takes on the project planning and suggestions for further improvements to the system.
