Abstract
The purpose of this study is to enlighten the experience of five mothers and their children's meeting with school. The mothers' children and adolescents which have autism spectrum diagnosis and school refusal, where they have difficulties at attending school. Because of negative emotions and associations which the school evokes. Earlier studies show that a high percent of the pupils at school experience school refusal, and that the children and adolescents with autism are especially vulnerable. Something that can be explained in need for better facilitative in school, which is the background for this thesis research question: How do the mothers of pupils with autism, experience the teacher’s facilitative initiatives to reduce school refusal?Through several qualitative interviews I achieved insight into the mother’s role in the school-home collaboration. I gained insight into their experience of the teacher’s role and work with facilitatively for their children and adolescents. The interview material therefore contains both positive and negative experiences, where the mothers shared some of the same experience, but at the same time sharing their unique story. This material became the foundation of transversal thematic analysis with systematic text condensation (STC)(Malterud, 2017), which contain features from phenomenology and social constructionism. The outcome of the analyses was three categories: 1) the etabelation and communication to a common goal, 2) Emotional support to safety and inclusion, 3) Facilitative to master’s academics. The first contains school-home collaboration and their work towards a common goal. The other addresses the teacher's direct support through the teacher-student relationship to security and a more indirect support through planning and organization. Within the last category, the academic stands in focus and the teacher’s ability to facilitate the students' mastery and motivation based on their cognitive style and interest.
The findings from the categories, in the light of related theory, allowed me to go in depth on the mothers' statements. The theory consists of, among others, Schibbye and Løvlie (2017) understanding of recognition, Bateson (2005) communication theory, the teacher's slow approach (Sæteren, 2019), Eccles and Wigfield`s (1983) expectancy-value theory and Nordahl's (2009) approaches to power in school-home collaboration. At the same time, Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory (1979) will be central throughout the thesis as it facilitates a holistic perspective of the pupils and highlights connections between the various systems in the child's life.
Based on the findings in the analysis, one gets an insight into how positive attitudes and knowledge about communication, power and the pupil group can strengthen the cooperation between parents and the school, between parents and students, and between teachers and students. A good communication with common agreement and goals, and a common understanding of how to achieve the goals, seems to be able to strengthen the teacher's opportunities, to facilitate the student's needs. A key aspect in the second category is the teacher-student relationship and how the teacher creates trust, by facilitating student participation and recognition in meetings with students. Communication is described as slow and patient, where the teacher listens to more than just words and reflects on how one affects the relationship. The indirect support consisted of organization, placement and planning as a basis for predictability, but also affiliation with the pupils. These areas also showed up in findings within the third category, where the physical prerequisites had to be present for learning. The design of tasks and the teacher's support became important for the students' ability to self-regulate. Where the children's and youth`s interests and the teacher's professional quality became important findings for mastery and motivation.
