Sammendrag: Betong står for store avfallsmengder i Norge.
Abstract Concrete accounts for large amounts of waste in Norway. With an increasing focus on reducing the amount of waste, this thesis puts the spotlight on climate effects that occur when reducing the amount of waste associated with demolition concrete. It must be quantified how climate effects change when the transport of surplus masses (concrete) to landfill is reduced. Furthermore, and using qualitative methods, the thesis examines challenges that stand in the way of achieving this purpose. To proceed to answer the question of the thesis, two scenarios have been chosen. In one scenario, all concrete waste is delivered to landfill and in the other a certain proportion (15%) of waste is delivered to recycling facilities. A recycling plant, Bondkall plant, has been chosen as a pilot plant within Oslo municipality. The plant belongs to Franzefoss's waste business. An LCA analysis has been carried out on how a continuous process of recycling concrete waste within Oslo municipality's boundaries can reduce the environmental impact associated with the transport of masses. A comparison of energy consumption and emissions to air for transporting contaminated concrete waste from Oslo to landfill and to pilot plants / recycling plants shows that energy consumption on the way to the landfill is much more than to the recycling plant. Further values for CO2 per ton indicate that the total CO2 emissions are lower in transport on the way to the pilot plant than to the landfill in that case. A high energy consumption can be explained due to the long road to the landfill, even though motorways represent the largest proportion of the roads to the landfill. According to the NLF and other sources in the thesis text, motorways are more environmentally friendly compared to urban roads with the idea of CO2 emissions per km. Nevertheless, long distances in scenario no. 1 led to the impact on both energy consumption and CO2 emissions eventually being much greater than shipping to recycling facilities. In the analysis method LCA with system boundary gate to gate, it was revealed that if 15% of the waste is recycled in scenario 2, CO2eq will be reduced by up to 25%. This improvement is primarily due to different types of sections and roads and the length of different sections. Further analyzes show how total CO2eq emissions are related to the amount (different percentage) of concrete delivered to recycling facilities. By increasing the percentage of recycled concrete, the total GWP (CO2eq) emitted to air is reduced. The main reason for this improvement is reduced transport of waste to landfill. If, for example, 60% of the waste is to be recycled instead of 15%, the emission of CO2eq from recycling facilities and transport to recycling facilities will increase by 2.63 kg per ton, while CO2eq emitted from transport to landfill will be reduced by 6.26 kg per ton. So the total CO2eq emissions to air are reduced by 3.63 kg per ton if the recycling rate is increased from 15% to 60%. These results are based on the assumptions on which this study is based.
