Et mangfold med rom for alle

Abstract

I denne masteroppgaven er Aon Raza Naqvis Third Culture Kids: Å vokse opp mellom kulturer (2019) gjenstand for analyse. Boken er en multimodal sakprosatekst som består av 28 portretter med alt ifra relativt kjente kulturpersonligheter som rapperen Chirag Patel og komiker Jonis Josef, til mindre kjente personligheter som billedkunstner Mohammad Fadlabi og klesdesigner Elnaz Gargari. Til felles har de alle en flerkulturell bakgrunn og deler sine historier og erfaringer om hvordan det er å vokse opp mellom kulturer. Målet med oppgaven har derfor vært å se på hvilket potensial teksten har for læreren i arbeid med flerkulturell litteratur i norskundervisningen og hvilke muligheter som ligger for læring i teksten om mangfold og identitet for elever. Problemstillingen for oppgaven er: «Hvordan uttrykkes identitet i Third Culture Kids: Å vokse opp mellom kulturer?».

For å svare på problemstillingen har det blitt brukt et teoretisk-metodisk utgangspunkt gjennom en tekstanalyse og nærlesing av Third Culture Kids, supplert med multimodale verktøy som ble knyttet opp mot postkoloniale perspektiv på identitet, begrepet mellomforskap samt teori om stedstilhørighet og kulturelle markører. Videre ble det valgt ut analysekategorier som baserte seg på summen av det teoretisk-metodiske kapittelet i oppgaven. Analysen viste at identitetsuttrykkene generelt innehar flere perspektiver på identitet som elever både med og uten flerkulturell bakgrunn trenger for å kunne utvikle sin identitet fra et trygt ståsted. Samtidig som de også spesifikt tilfører barn og unge med flerkulturell bakgrunn muligheter til å kunne speile seg selv i forbilder og ikke igjennom folks stereotypier og holdninger. Avslutningsvis blir det gjort noen refleksjoner om Third Culture Kids nytteverdi for læreren i norskundervisningen, dersom hen ønsker å videreføre narrativ om at dagens mangfold skal være for alle og ikke bare de som skiller seg ut.

In this master's thesis, Aon Raza Naqvis' Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Between Cultures (2019) is the subject of this analysis. The book is a multimodal non-fiction text consisting of 28 portraits with everything from relatively well-known cultural personalities such as rapper Chirag Patel and comedian Jonis Josef, to lesser-known personalities such as visual artist Mohammad Fadlabi and clothing designer Elnaz Gargari. What these persons have in common, is that they have a multicultural background and share their stories and experiences of growing up between cultures. This thesis therefore aims to investigate what potential the book has for the teacher in work with multicultural literature. And further to look at the opportunities to learn students about diversity and identity. The thesis statement for this master is: «How is identity expressed in Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Between Cultures»?

To answer the thesis problem, it was used a theoretical and methodological starting point. Which was a close reading and text analysis, supplemented with multimodal tools that were linked to postcolonial perspectives on identity, the concept of intermediate knowledge and theory of place belonging and cultural markers. Furthermore, the analysis was based on the selection of categories made from the theoretical and methodological chapter of the thesis. The analysis showed that the identity expressions generally have several perspectives on identity that students both with and without a multicultural background need to be able to develop their identity from a safe point of view. At the same time, they also provide children and young people with a multicultural background opportunity to reflect on themselves in role models and not through people’s stereotypes and attitudes. Finally, reflections are made on the usefulness of Third Culture Kids: Growing Up Between Cultures for teachers in Norwegian, that is only if they want to continue the narrative that today's diversity should be for everyone and not just those who stands out.
