The Attempt to Abolish the Binary of Sex and Gender in Octavia Butler’s Dawn

Abstract

Octavia Butler's roman "Dawn" fra 1987 følger hennes tendens til å skrive verk som er utforskende og som dykker inn i temaer som ikke nødvendigvis er i tråd med menneskers normer. Et eksempel på dette er hvordan temaet kjønn behandles i "Dawn", hvor vi møter romvesener som ikke har den samme kjønnsinndelingen som vi mennesker. Jeg undersøker hvorvidt Butler benytter science fiction sjangerens utforskende natur til en tilfredstillende grad når det gjelder kjønn, og spesielt om hun er i stand til å legge fra seg den normative todelte måten å tenke på kjønn på. Hvordan behandler romanen de som ikke føyer seg innunder denne todelte tankemåten sentrert rundt mann og kvinne, og hvilke verdier og holdninger ligger gjemt bak den behandlingen de mottar? Er science fiction den beste sjangeren å utforske slike problemstillinger i? Og viktigst av alt; utnytter Butler den muligheten sjangeren gir henne?

Octavia Butler's novel "Dawn" from 1987 follows her tendency of creating literary works that are explorative in nature, and that delve into issues that may not follow human norms. An example of this is how the issues of sex and gender are approached in "Dawn", where we encounter an alien race that operate with a division of sexes much different from our own. I will investigate whether Butler satisfactorily utilises the explorative nature of the science fiction genre in regards to sex and gender. I will especially focus on whether Butler is able to escape the binary thinking of sex and gender that seems to be the norm amongst humans. How are people who deviate from this norm treated in the novel, and what intentions and attitudes are hidden behind that treatment? Is science fiction the most suitable genre in which to explore issues such as these? And most importantly; is Butler making full use of the opportunity that is given to her by this genre?
