Biskabiiyang - Returning to Ourselves: Reimagining 'Science' Through Indigenous SF

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven for lektorstudenter tar for seg reformuleringen av konseptet "science" i "science fiction" skrevet av Nordamerikanske urfolk. Gjennom en analyse av to noveller fra SF og spekulativ fiksjon-antologien mitéwácimowina, blir det presentert hvordan Nordamerikanske urfolks-forfattere bruker humor og "survivance" på en måte som presenterer det vestlige vitenskapelige paradigme som et verktøy for kolonialisme og hvordan forfattere med urfolksbakgrunn kan bruke motstandslitteratur for å utfordre den tradisjonelle SF litteraturen. Resultatet er en litterær retning som viser at "indigenous ways of knowing", oversatt her som urfolkskunnskap, er like gyldig og vitenskapelig som den vestlige kunnskapen og at man derfor bør ta til orde for en vid definisjon av konseptet "science" i science fiction.

This Bachelor Thesis for Student Teachers concerns the reformulation of the concept of ‘science’ in SF written by Indigenous authors from North America. Through an analysis of two novels from the Indigenous SF and speculative fiction anthology mitêwâcimowina, is it shown how Indigenous authors use humor and survivance to present the Western scientific paradigm as a tool for colonialism and how indigenous authors can write literature of resistance to challenge the traditional SF literature. The result is a literary movement where Indigenous ways of knowing are acknowledged as just as valid and scientific as Western science, which is why we should accept a wider definition of the concept of science in SF.
