Abstract

Hvordan har Austråttborgen blitt forstått i samtiden gjennom et halvt århundre – fra 1916 til 1961? Gjennom en undersøkelse av arkivmateriale blir det i denne oppgaven forsøkt å fange samtidsforståelsen i en tid da Austråttborgen gjennomgikk markante forandringer. Etter et lynnedslag ble Austrått brent ned til ruinene, noe som førte til en årelang gjenreisning. Samtidig vokste kulturminnevernet seg mer synlig i samfunnet, som førte til at nye spørsmål måtte stilles. Hvordan ble tapet av Austråttborgen som følge av brannen i 1916 forstått i samtiden? Ble det stilt spørsmål til hvorvidt en gjenreisning skulle skje, og har påfølgende valg endret synet på autentisitet? Gjennomgående stilles det spørsmål ved den kollektive samtidsforståelsen av Austrått som historisk eller kulturhistorisk sted.

How has the contemporary understanding of the manor of Austrått been through half a century – from 1916 to 1961? Through an examination of archival material, this thesis seeks to capture contemporary understanding at a time when the manor of Austrått went through severe changes. After a lightning strike, the manor of Austrått was burned down to the ruins, which led to a years-long reconstruction. Meanwhile, the cultural heritage preservation became more prominent in society, which led to new questions having to be asked. After the 1916 fire, what was the contemporary understanding of the loss of the manor of Austrått? Were questions raised to whether a recostruction should take place, and did following choices change the outlook on authenticity. Throughout, the collective contemporary understanding of Austrått as a historical or cultural-historical place is questioned.
