Did the English Empire use linguistics as an active tool of imperialism?

Abstract

Denne oppgaven baserer seg på problemstillingen «Brukte det Britiske imperiet lingvistikk som et aktivt verktøy i sin imperialisme?

Jeg har hentet informasjon fra Robert Phillipson og mye av hans arbeid, da han har undersøkt tematikken i dybden gjennom sine bøker Linguistic imperialism (1992) og Linguistic Imperialism Continued (2010), samtidig som jeg har hentet informasjon fra dokumenter fra kolonitiden og utstedte mennesker fra Storbritannia og rundt om i verden, samtidig som jeg har innhentet informasjon fra akademikere som har undersøkt både lingvistikk, historien til tematikken og regionen, samt annen relevant informasjon jeg har funnet. Jeg fant det ikke pragmatisk å utføre egne studer da dette er tidkrevende og vanskelig, spesielt siden deler av oppgaven tar for seg historiske tider det ikke lenger finnes gjenlevende mennesker fra, ei heller ser jeg for meg jeg kom til å finne personer som ga et tydeligere svar på problemstillingen enn dokumenter eller historiske bevis kom til å gi meg. Med andre ord blir denne oppgaven en ren casestudie. I denne oppgaven kommer jeg til å legge frem argumentasjon jeg har funnet for og imot problemstillingen, før jeg avslutningsvis drøfter bevisene og informasjonen jeg har funnet. Hovedfunnene i oppgaven er at det er overveiende sannsynlig at språk ble brukt som et aktivt middel av imperialisme av Storbritannia under koloniseringen av verden. Uavhengig om det var et bevist og aktivt valg å bruke språk til kolonisering, var det en utrolig effektiv strategi.

English summary

This thesis is based on the research question “did the British Empire use linguistic as an active tool in its imperialism?

I have gathered information from Robert Phillipson and a lot of his work, as he has investigated the thematic in depth in his books Linguistic Imperialism (1992) and Linguistic Imperialism Continues (2010). At the same time, I have collected information from documents from the colonial times and issued men from the British empire located around the world. I have also gathered information from various academics who have researched linguistics, the history of the thematic and the region, as well as other relevant information I have been able to gather. I did not find it pragmatical to do any research of my own as this would have been heavily time consuming and difficult given the timespan of this paper as well as the aspect of time. Given the timeline for this thesis it would not be possible to find living examples of living officials from the most relevant time period. Nor did I expect to find more compelling evidence giving a clearer answer to the research question than the information I did find. In other words, this study will purely be a case study. In this thesis I will present arguments I have found pro and con the research question before I finish by discussing evidence and information I have found. The main conclusion of this paper is that it is highly probable that linguistics was used as an active mean of imperialism by the British during colonisation of the world. Regardless of the intention of the implementation of the English language, it was an incredibly effective strategy when it came to colonisation.
