Sammendrag
Ever since the French presidential election in 2017, it has been predicted that in this year 2022, there will be a return settlement between incumbent President Emmanuel Macron with his center party La République En Marche! and Marine le Pen, leader of the right-wing populist party Front National. The election in April ended in favour of Macron, but right-wing extremism is more than ever a factor in French politics and in politics around the world. Why has France seen an ever-increasing support around right-wing radical parties?
For that reason, this thesis will look at the rise of the far right in France and more specific with focus on the causal factors of unemployment and globalization to see if this influence when people vote in president elections. The theses are based on a qualitative approach to the research question Why has France seen an ever-increasing support around right-wing radical parties? The paper has looked at the last five presidential election and the support to the far-right parties, the unemployment rate and aspects regarding globalization. The thesis finds a positive connection between increasing support for right-wing radical parties and rising unemployment between 2002-2017, but this year presidential election breaks with previous pattern.
