Abstract
The topic I want to highlight in this bachelor thesis is the children’s voice in child welfare work, with the following issue: Does the child conversation bring out the child’s voice in the child welfare work?
The thesis is answered by using a literature study as a method and aims to shed light on theoretical and methodological aspects related to whether children are able to voice their opinion in the child’s conversation, as it is carried out in the child welfare service or in environmental therapeutic work, for example in institutions and family centres.
Research and statistics show challenges related to children's participation in the implementation of the children's conversation, showing a great potential for improvement within this area. Furthermore, the thesis presents relevant legal frameworks, children's views through the ages, the child's own perspective, the children's perspective, communication, The Dialogical Communication Method (DCM) and Roger Harts “ladder of Children’s Participation.
The issue is discussed considering relevant theory and methods, looking at whether the children's conversation as a method is promoting or inhibiting. Likewise, it problematizes the adults' view on and understanding of children and childhood, and whether the attitudes and behaviours of adults can influence whether children get their voice heard. Finally, it is discussed why it is important that children do get their voice implemented and how we can try to ensure that children's voices appear to a greater extent in the children's conversation.
