dc.description.abstractThis thesis seeks to investigate the use of English in teenage magazines in Norway. Five magazines were chosen to constitute the thesis, all written with teenagers and young adults as the target readers; Topp, Julia, Elle, Costume and Det Nye. The magazines are divided into two groups; one group aiming at teenagers (Topp and Julia), and the other group aiming at young adults (Elle, Costume and Det Nye). The project revealed interesting results in terms of the use of English, especially between the two groups. However, although the use of code-switching was confirmed through regular appearances, the use of English occurred to be somewhat restrained. This was discovered through the tendency to prefer idiomatic expressions rather than to write spontaneously and the use of italics to mark the codes as foreign or different. The author of this thesis argues that although the use of English is highly present, it may appear as somewhat confined, comprising shorter lexemes and settled phrases at a less advanced level, hence reflecting the level of English language proficiency at which the target readers are expected to exist.nb_NO
