This thesis will, by doing a literature review in the databases: PubMed and SPORTDiscus, look into the published research done on MTSS prevention the last 15 years. The goal is to try to find the best preventative measures that can be done for MTSS. MTSS is an overuse injury located on the inside of the shin. MTSS is often seen when there is a substantial increase in training load and is common in athletes that do a lot of running and jumping on hard surfaces. Five relevant articles were found in the systematic review, all in PubMed. The results from these articles indicate that gait-retaining combined with preventative training exercises and foot orthoses are favourable preventative measures for MTSS. Preventative training exercises alone seems to have no effect. The studies are not without fault as they are preformed largely on homogenous populations. In addition, kinesio taping and rigid taping could be favourable for correction biomechanical risk factors for MTSS. But these studies have methodological weaknesses and few participants. Therefore there is a need for further research with randomized controlled study design.
