Hvordan designe for å unngå seksuell tabu

Abstract

Målet med arbeidet for denne oppgaven var å utforske brukersentrert design i en tabubelagt kontekst. Denne tematikken krevde av meg at jeg jobbet tett med brukere. I oppgaven har jeg tilnærmet meg et tema som det finnes lite eksisterende forskning på. Ved å benytte meg av designmetoder har jeg forsøkt å skape et rom for at dem temaet omhandler har blitt hørt. Innsikten fra arbeidet har gitt meg en mulighet til å se på hvilke måter design kan bidra til å minske seksuell tabu. Mål Oppgaven er tenkt som et bidrag til utforskning av hvordan man kan designe for å unngå seksuelt tabu. Med hensyn til brukeren ønsket jeg å lage et konkret konsept. Bak dette lå et omfattende innsiktsarbeid, blant annet studier av eksisterende løsninger og brukerinvolvering. Håpet er at oppgaven kan være til nytte for arbeid innenfor seksuell helse, men også for fremtidige oppgaver i tilgrensende temaer. Prosessen Denne oppgaven startet med store mengder informasjon som måtte innhentes. Det var viktig for meg ikke å begrense meg tematisk for tidlig. Jeg ønsket å forstå seksuelt tabu før jeg kunne begi meg ut på de konkrete utfordringene. Seksuelt tabu er et tema som utspiller seg på tvers av fagfelt. Jeg ønsket å utforske hvordan jeg som designer kunne en rolle. For å avgrense temaet, og gjøre oppgaven overkommelig, valgte jeg å avgrense den til å fokusere på mannlig seksualitet. Gjennom møter med menn oppsto stadig ny problematikk jeg kunne ta tak i. Dette ga ved flere anledninger oppgaven ny retning. Mangel på samtaler rundt dette temaet var den viktigste observasjonen i løpet av prosessen. Her fantes det rom for en designintervensjon. Siste del av prosessen tok for seg hvordan jeg kunne ta kunnskapen jeg hadde tilegnet og formulere dette til et forståelig og brukbart konsept. Resultat Det endelige sluttresultatet er en plakatløsning. Den har som formål å fasilitere til samtaler om mannlig seksualitet. I etterkant føler jeg at oppgavens hovedtyngde ligger i kunnskapen som er blitt tilegnet underveis, og som dokumenteres i denne rapporten. Jeg mener at dette studiet kan være til nytte for fremtidige designere, men også til dem som føler seg truffet av oppgaven problemstilling.

The goal of this research was to explore user oriented design in the context of sexual taboo. This topic forced me to work with actual users. The thesis is a work within a field where there is little prior research. By using design methodology, I have tried to create a space so that those dealing with the challenges presented in the thesis, feel heard. The insight has given me the opportunity to explore in what ways design can reduce sexual taboo. Goal This thesis is thought of as a contribution in exploring how design can help prevent sexual taboo. In taking the user’s perspective into account, I wanted to make a concrete concept. Behind this was a comprehensive process of gathering information, through the insight gained throughout the work process. This work was in part the process of studying existing solutions and services, in addition to conversations with actual users. My hope is that the thesis can be of utility for work within the field of sexual health, but also for future thesis on adjacent topics. Process The process started with a lot of information needed to be gathered. It was important for me not to limit myself in terms of subjects at a too early stage of the process. I wanted to understand sexual taboo before I could explore the concrete challenges. Sexual taboo as a topic is played out in numerous academic fields. I wanted to explore how I, as a designer, could contribute. To make the thesis sufficiently focused, I decided to study the topic of male sexuality. Conversations with professionals and members of the target group made way for new questions and challenges. This changed the direction of the thesis on several occasions. The absence of conversations on male sexuality was the most important observation throughout the process. This was a potential for a design intervention. The last part of the process was to transform the insight into a concrete solution that can be of use. Result The end solution is formulated as a poster. The intention is that this could facilitate conversations concerning male sexuality. I feel that the main value of this thesis is the insight gathered throughout the process. This report is the documentation of this insight. I think this thesis can be of use for future designers, but also to anyone who feels targeted by the topic.
