Monads, Algebras and Descent Theory

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven er en redegjørelse av artiklene Facets of Descent I og III av G. Janelidze og W. Tholen om avstamningsteori. Vi begynner med å studere den preliminære teorien om monader og Barr--Beck teoremet. Deretter utvikler vi den monadiske tilnærmelsesmåten til avstamningsteori samt tilnærmingen via grothendieckfibrasjoner. Til slutt gir vi en elementær tilnærmelsesmåte til det klassiske avstamningsproblemet for moduler og algebraer.

This bachelor's thesis is an exposition of the articles Facets of Descent I and III by G. Janelidze and W. Tholen on descent theory. We start by studying the preliminary theory of monads and the Barr--Beck theorem. Then, we develop the monadic approach to descent theory and the approach via Grothendieck fibrations. Finally, we give an elementary approach to the classical descent problem for modules and algebras.
