dc.description.abstract | The articulated intervention autonomous underwater vehicle (AIAUV) is an overactuated underwater floating base manipulator with powerful thrusters and a slender body capable of performing manipulation tasks. The redundancy of the AIAUV enables multi-task control problems to be solved, including task priority schemes capable of solving tasks in a hierarchy such that safety-critical tasks can be prioritized over other tasks. Motivated by the complexity of the system and the resulting difficulty in employing model-based control methods, this thesis explores how reinforcement learning can be used in AIAUV control. To facilitate research on control of AIAUVs a software toolbox is developed in Julia, and a reinforcement learning-based control method is proposed.
