The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the extent to which it is profitable to reuse the load-bearing concrete structure in a building rather than demolish and build a new construction. In choosing the problem, we have emphasized the study's main goal: "Sustainability as a concept and the significance it has for the construction industry", and the challenges the construction industry faces in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. We have aimed to look at the effect of extending the life of the load-bearing concrete structure of a building from 60 to 120 years. The group is based on a known building stock (Lærerskolen på Landås in Bergen) to obtain basic data. With this numerical basis as a reference, we have designed two scenarios to shed light on the environmental and climate effects that such reuse entails. The group has also carried out a Life-cycle cost analysis to examine the possible financial consequences of such an approach. The result is set in the context of relevant theory, and although there is uncertainty associated with the result, it has been concluded that this shows that there will be a significant environmental, as well as climatic benefit from reusing the load-bearing concrete structure. The financial gain on the other hand, will be so modest that from an economic point of view, it will not be considered worth the risk. This is because rehabilitation is associated with a number of uncertainties.
