In this paper, the incompressible external flow around an offshore drilling riser with fairings at Reynolds number 5000 is used to study the effects of varying boundary conditions in numerical simulations. We use a direct numerical simulation (DNS) to compare and verify large eddy simulations (LES) and use further simulations to explain the effects of different boundary conditions that can occur in a physical experiment. Particular attention is drawn towards the impact of the no-slip spanwise boundary condition often occurring in circulating water tunnels and similar setups because of fixed walls.en_US
