dc.description.abstractSelf-selected texts have obtained a larger position in the Norwegian curriculum for the English subject. In the core element of the curriculum the concept of texts is used in a broad sense and includes, amongst others, both spoken and written as well as graphic and artistic texts. This newly enhanced part of the curriculum has entailed a larger interest for the topic, and therefore this paper will look at how working with self-selected texts can increase pupil participation and motivation in the EFL classroom. This study also examines what types of texts pupils prefer to read and how these are implemented in the classroom. Through interviews with teachers and surveys with pupils, this study shows that teachers and pupils are mostly positive regarding implementing self-selection in an EFL classroom. From the interviews we learn that the teachers’ attitudes towards this relate to three themes: work, interest and challenges. The survey conducted with pupils revealed that most of the pupils thought a greater use of self-selection would increase both their motivation and in-class participation. However, some pupils did not think this would change anything, and some did not want to choose for themselves, but liked it better when the teachers made the decision for them.
