In the contemporary society, students and the general public are more likely to access historical knowledge through mediums such as film. This sheds light on the value of evaluating how they can be utilized, and what they can provide. Although film is a medium that has been utilized for decades, it is still a relevant approach to discuss. Through a qualitative case study, this thesis explores how films, both historical feature films and documentary films, can be an effective approach to teach lower-secondary school students about the Civil Rights Movement. I have chosen to do a visual analysis of two films in order to examine the research question for this thesis. Based on the research and analysis, I argue that both feature films and documentaries, can be an effective approach to provide a broader understanding of the Civil Rights Movement. This happens through developing the students’ intercultural competence within this topic, and visual literacy.
