The theme for this master thesis is how multimodal discursive elements can be used in the process of developing new learning spaces and how students’ participation can influence these elements in the process. The interest for spaces of learning is steady increasing, and the purpose of this project is to investigate how the discourse between students’ participation and how the physical learning areas can be seen in relation to the methodological approach known as multimodal critical discourse analysis. The analysis and the framework for the assignment is based on a workshop held in the spring of 2020 in connection with the reconstruction of a traditional learning space. The participations of the workshop consisted mainly of students, and therefore it would be relevant to discuss the workshop in relation to the result and the process, where the students participate and involve in the process of a future learning space. Based on the research question the project can be summarized, from a methodological, empiric and a practical perspective. A central goal in this project is to enlighten the opportunities a multimodal critical discourse analysis opens up, and how the findings can be used in further discussions connected to the thematic. This assignment uses these findings from the analysis, in what makes up a critical discussion in connection to learning spaces. Concepts from social semantics and multimodal critical discourse analysis will be used to potentially reveal ideological relations, and to understand how multimodal texts and visual elements can communicate. The empirical base will foremost be gathered from the workshop as visual elements and modalities linked to both participants and the hosts’ contributions. To enlighten the projects’ sociocultural context, this assignment will also refer to several student papers and texts written by students. A key finding in this project is the clear connection between the hosts’ contribution to the workshop and the participants’ results. Based on the assumptions of this project the sender of multimodal texts may seem to influence the viewer’s attitudes or actions – in this case, based on the results of the workshop that are linked to the hosts’ contribution. Little research has been conducted on these type types of innovative learning spaces, and based on this I want to contribute to this field. I hope that this projects’ contribution can raise awareness and the importance of future learning spaces and places for students. The theoretical and methodological contribution have enlightened this thematic from a multimodal critic discursive analytical perspective. This shows how multimodal resources and visual tools can play a significant communicative role, but also how a text can, and should be understood as more than just a written text. This assignment will only show a fraction of what this large, and probably growing methodological approach to multimodal critical discourse analysis. The practical implications in this assignment have shown that students are willingly to contribute and participate in the development of future learning spaces, where student’s participation can be understood to be a central aspect on many ways connected to learning spaces. Key terms: multimodal critical discourse analysis, multimodality, learning space, identity space, student space, identity, belonging, community, space, student centered learning, discourse, social semantic, modality.
