In this master's thesis, the field of special education is examined in the context of the role of special educators in child and adolescent psychiatry (BUP). More specifically, the study examines special educators' descriptions of their own work assignments, as well as experiences related to them. The purpose is to be able to contribute important knowledge to the special education field, with emphasis on the role special educators have in BUP clinics to improve mental health, and thus also learning and development, in children and adolescents.
For this study I have posed the following thesis question: what does the role of the special education teacher in BUP entail?
To answer the question, a qualitative research approach is used, since I want to go into the depth of the special education teachers descriptions and experiences. In this context, I have thus interviewed three special education teachers at three different BUP clinics. Based on the empiricism, I found three main categories that formed the basis for further analysis and discussion in the thesis: direct work with children and adolescents, indirect work with children and adolescents and interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration. The categories further constitute the findings of the study, in that the special education teachers describe that their role in BUP involves work at different levels, more specifically: assessment and treatment, as part of direct work with children and adolescents, parent and teacher collaboration, as part of indirect work with children and adolescents, as well as internal and external collaboration, as part of interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration. In the aftermath of this, the focus on recognition, mastery and that all parties can get their opinions through, can also be seen as central findings in connection with the role of the special education teachers in BUP.
