Hvordan erfarer pasienter med tarmstomi utfordringene i forhold til selvbilde og seksualitet, og hva er viktig for å mestre utfordringene?

Abstract

Hensikt: Hensikten med studien er å utforske hvilke erfaringer stomipasienter har i forhold til sitt eget selvbilde og sin seksualitet, og hva er viktig for å kunne mestre disse utfordringene. Hensikten blir og å vise hvilke konsekvenser dette har for sykepleie.

Metode: Oppgaven er en systematisk litteratur studie som inkluderer åtte forskningsartikler.

Resultat: Funnene i studiene viser til at det er dårlig informasjon fra helsepersonell på hvordan en stomi kan påvirke pasienten både fysisk og psykisk. Det blir ikke diskutert hvordan selvbildet blir påvirket, de seksuelle vanskene som kan oppstå og hvordan pasientene endrer hvordan de fremstår. Med god veiledning, kommunikasjon og støtte fra partner og andre i nær relasjon hjelper man pasienten å mestre sine utfordringer med stomien.

Konklusjon: Studiene viser at stomipasienter har flere ulike utfordringer i hverdagen. Disse består av å akseptere sin nye kropp, manglende informasjon fra helsepersonell og begrensinger i hverdagen. En sentral mestringsstrategi var å ha god kommunikasjon og veiledning fra sykepleier for å kunne takle sine utfordringer med stomi. Sykepleier må gi god tilpasset informasjon angående hvordan stomien vil påvirke pasientens selvbilde og seksualitet.

Background: It is carried out around 2000 stoma surgeries each year in Norway. After a stoma surgery, new challenges appear like becoming comfortable in their own body.

Aim: The aim of the study is to explore the different experiences stoma patients have about their self-esteem and sexuality, and how to cope with their difficulties. Further on, the aim is also to show the consequences of nursing in this patient group.

Method: It is a systematic study, that includes eight research articles.

Result: The results of the study show that the information from health care workers is not good enough when it comes to how the stoma surgery will affect the patient both physically and psychological. With guidance, communication and support from a partner or others in near relation to the patient, it can help them to master their challenges with the stoma.

Conclusion: The studies show that stoma patients have multiple different challenges that effects their daily life. These challenges are difficulties to accept their new bodies, lack of information from health workers and limitations in everyday life. A key coping strategy was to have good communication and guidance from the nurse to be able to cope with their challenges with a stoma. Nurse must be able to provide good adapted information regarded how the stoma will affect the patient’s self-esteem and sexuality.
