Her
dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis is to determine how accurate it is possible to reconstruct
a point cloud based on a substantial amount of image data, and to determine whether a point
cloud of this quality has any practical uses.
This is done by producing a considerable amount of image data, and a trial/error approach to
figuring out the optimal parameters, to produce point clouds with the least amount of
deviation from a reference point cloud. The reference point cloud is acquired with a
laserscanner.
We have tested how different parameters in Pix4Dmapper affects the reconstruction. These
parameters are, how the number of GCP’s and number of images used for the reconstruction,
affects the results. We have also looked at what geometrically verified matching does to the
point cloud and how equirectangular projection behaves in a photogrammetry software.
We have experienced that the number of images dictates together with the number of images
with marked GCP’s, the global average deviation between the reference point cloud and the
test point cloud; the more images, the less deviation.
Without the use of geometrically verified matching, the ATP’s are matched based solely on
the content of the images. When using geometrically verified matching, the relative positions
of the images are also taken into account when computing matches, so that geometrically
unrealistic matches are rejected. The statistics from the quality reports are not behaving as we
expected, and as result of this, we have not been able to explain these results.
The equirectangular projection gives a high overlap which makes it easier to find tie points in
the center of the images. However, as we move closer to the top and bottom of the images,
distortion increases, and tie points computed here are therefore of lower accuracy than of
those in the center. This produces unreliable tie points, which contributes along with other
factors, to noise in the resulting point cloud.
For a project of this size, one must account for a shy day’s work of fieldwork for the data
acquisition with the camera. In addition to this, five more hours went with processing the best
point cloud. We ended up with a little more than 12 hours from start to finish for the vi
photogrammetry method, and about four hours with the laserscanner. The time spent placing
targets (45 min) is not taken into account for these estimations.
The least amount of deviation that we were able to produce between the reference point cloud
and the test point cloud, was a global average of 10,6 cm. With deviations of such magnitude,
we cannot see that this method can be used for example as – built control. This type of
documentation requires better accuracy than this method can provide.
By automating the process from data acquisition, to reconstruction of the point cloud, it is
perhaps possible to have a mounted camera continuously update a point cloud/model of a
construction site. A spherical camera may be mounted on a moving object such as an
excavator, bulldozer or maybe a drilling rig, and will thus be moved around the site. With
deviations of 10,6 cm. the details will of course be hard to reconstruct accurately, but such a
point cloud might be able to show the bigger picture for foremen/leaders, so that they don’t
necessarily have to leave their office barracks to catch up on the project. | |
