In this thesis, a concept design is developed for a research vessel based on requirements from Skipsteknisk AS. The purpose is to assist the shipowner in the decision-making process. Different designs and technical solutions are investigated and compared before a final concept is developed. Shipowner's wishes for a solution with the least possible cost framework are considered. Solutions with a focus on the environment and reduction of carbon footprints are considered at the same time. The delivery of the concept development consists of a general arrangement, stability calculations, tonnage calculations, 3D image, specification, and a towing test report. The main motivation of the towing test was to compare the resistance and movement of the selected hull shape for the concept with a similar hull with a bulbous bow. The results from the towing test are uncertain due to several sources of error and problems with upscaling model resistance to ship resistance. The results of using empirical methods show greater differences between the two hulls.
