This thesis is written in conjunction with an internship in BW LPG. The thesis is about the costs around the retrofit of the propulsion system on a VLGC. BW LPG is retrofitting 12 of their VLGCs so they kan consumpt LPG as main fuel. The costs around this project is compared with the two most common solutions, scrubber and a fuel shift to VLSFO, to be in compliance with IMO 2020. The problem to be adressed is: Will the retrofitcosts of the VLGCs pay off and wil they be prioriticed?
To be able to answer the thesis question research articles, litterature and analyses is collected to do calculations. In addition to this a qualitative interview with a very experienced person with over 30 years in the maritime business has been done. Using these methods enough data and information is collected to illuminate the issue.
It is proven in the thesis that the retrofit costs on the VLGCs will pay off after some time measured against scrubber and VLSFO. If the charterers will prioritice the retrofitted ships compared to the others is to early to say, maybe if more ships of this kind gets on water and new regulations are being made.
