Erlend Loe has a clear critique of the consumer society through humour and satire. Mankind desecrates flora and fauna, therefore it is legitimate for the main characters to make the choice to physically desecrate the five greatest animals in Africa. Loe exposes human weaknesses and vices, as well as how people turn to each other when the challenges arise. He portrays people who fail and writes about conflicting events that make us laugh. The theory of superiority and the theory of incongruence are thus relevant for describing Erlend Loe's humour, in a topic that most readers of the book will probably have an antipathy to, namely abusing animals.
