Fantasy og den Metafiktive Narren: Personanalyse i The Way of Kings

Abstract

Fantasy er en skjønnlitterær sjanger som inviterer leserne sine inn i fantastiske verdener, hvor det finnes magi, mytiske vesener og eventyrlige reiser. Fantasybøker gir leseren innblikk i andre verdener hvor alt kan skje. I denne teksten skal jeg se på hvordan fantasy, som er en stor og omfattende sjanger, kan deles opp i undersjangrer og kategorier, og hvordan boken The Way of Kings passer inn i fantasysjangeren. For å forstå de vanlige inndelingene vi møter i fantasy vil jeg se på hvordan handlingsforløpet og narrasjonen plasserer verket i sjangeren, og på hvordan man kan analysere handlingens opphav, nemlig den Fiktive Personen. Jeg tar for meg personen Wit, en tilsynelatende allvitende narr. Selv om rollen hans i verket ikke er stor, viser den på en kort og konsis måte alle de forskjellige stegene i karakterisering, og hvordan en liten rolle kan ha stor påvirkningskraft. Gjennom denne personen får The Way of Kings et metafiktiv aspekt, som stiller spørsmål om litteraturens formål.

Fantasy is a fictional genre that invites its readers into fantastic worlds, where there is magic, mythical beings and adventurous journeys. Fantasy books give the reader insight into other worlds where anything can happen. In this text, I will look at how fantasy, which is a large and comprehensive genre, can be divided into subgenres and categories, and how the book The Way of Kings fits into the fantasy genre. To understand the usual divisions we encounter in fantasy, I will look at how the plot and narrative place the work in the genre, and how one can analyze the origin of the plot, namely the Fictional Person. I will analyse Wit, a seemingly omniscient Fool. Although his role in the work is not large, it shows in a quick and concise way all the different steps in characterization, and how a small role can have a great influence. Through this person, The Way of Kings gets a metafictional aspect, which questions nature of literature.
