Skinheads and identity conflict in the 1980s: A look at identity conflicts among skinheads in the films This is England and Beverly

Abstract

Skinhead-subkulturen er i vestlig kultur godt etablert som et bilde på vold, rasisme, og hat. På tross av dette er bakgrunnen for subkulturen langt mer nyansert og involverer et komplekst spekter av identiteter og ideologier. Ved bruk av filmene This is England (2006) og Beverly (2015) forsøker denne oppgaven å analysere disse identitetene for å oppdage samspillet og konfliktene mellom dem. Hva disse identitetskonfliktene kan lære oss om Storbritannia på 1980-tallet vil også være et fokus. Oppgaven finner at filmene er et nyttig verktøy for å kommunisere de forskjellige identitetene som presenteres gjennom karakterene, og sammen med sekundærkilder skaper de et nyansert perspektiv rundt skinhead-subkulturens byggesteiner, samt det som tillot den å endre seg til forskjellige versjoner av seg selv. The skinhead in western culture is firmly solidified as an image of violence, racism, and hate. Despite this, the origin of the subculture is far more nuanced and involves a complex range of identities and ideologies. Using the films This is England (2006) and Beverly (2015), this thesis attempts to analyze these identities to discover the interaction and conflict between them. Furthermore, what these identity conflicts can teach us about Britain in the1980s will also be a focus. The thesis finds that the films are powerful tools in communicating the different identities of the characters, and along with secondary sources they offer a nuanced perspective into the elements that created the skinhead subculture and what allowed it to diverge into different versions. The identity conflicts in the films are represented through the characters’ struggles and choices, and their dynamic presentation helps show the multifaceted situation surrounding identity in Britain during the 1980s.
