Anzia Yezierska’s USA -The Jewish experience explored through Hungry Hearts.

Abstract

I denne oppgåva har eg sett på korleis Anzia Yezierska (1880-1970) skildra liva til jødiske innvandrarar, og særleg kvinner, i USA i begynnelsen av 1900-tallet. I oppgåva har eg diskutert Yezierska si novellesamling Hungry Hearts (2020). Sjølv om eg ikkje berre er interessert i nøyaktigheta av Yezierska si skriving, har eg òg nytta Jacob A. Riis ' sin studie av forholda der innvandrarar budde i urbane områder på byrjinga av 1900-tallet, How the other half lives – Studies among the tenements of New York (2018), som ei referanseramme for hennar forfattarskap. Eg har òg nytta The Promised Land, av Mary Antin, for å få bakgrunnskunnskap om perioden. The Promised Land vart først gitt ut i 1912. In answering the thesis question for this BA, I strongly believe it is fair to say that the lives of the majority of immigrants to the United States of America, and especially Jews, was hard. The slums of New York, the setting for so many stories of Jewish immigrants, was in every aspect a melting pot of different people from around the world. They all had the same goal of achieving the American dream.

In this thesis, I have looked at how Anzia Yezierska (1880-1970) depicts the lives of Jewish immigrants, and especially women, in the United States of America during the early 20th century. In the thesis, I have discussed Yezierska’s short story collection Hungry Hearts (2020). Though I am not only interested in the accuracy of Yezierska’s writing, I have also used Jacob A. Riis’ (2018) study of the conditions under which immigrants lived in urban areas during the early 1900s, How the other half lives – Studies among the tenements of New York, as a frame of reference for her writing. Finally, I have used The Promised Land, by Mary Antin, to gain background knowledge on the period. The Promised Land was first published in 1912. Når eg har svart på oppgavespørsmålet for denne Bacheloroppgåva, meine eg at det er rimelig å seie at liva til fleirtalet av innvandrere til USA, og spesielt jødane, var vanskeleg. Slummen i New York, ramma for så mange historier om jødiske innvandrarar, var i kvart aspekt ein smeltedigel av forskjellige mennesker frå hele verda. Dei hadde alle det samme målet om å oppnå den amerikanske drømmen.
