Jojo Rabbit (2019) and Caging Skies (2004): How Personal Stories tie in with Literature about WWII

Abstract

I denne oppgaven har jeg formulert problemstillingen "Waititis og Leunens personlige forhold til krigen har formet Jojo Rabbit og Caging Skies til to veldig ulike histories." Dette blir først framstilt i introduksjon hvor jeg først skriver om historien om fiksjonen om Andre Verdenskrig. Deretter forteller jeg om Caging Skies (2004) og Jojo Rabbit (2019), de to verkene jeg diskuterer. Etter dette definerer begrepet "Postmemory", før jeg starter på analysen og diskusjonen av filmen og boken. Analysen består av tre deler, hvor jeg analyserer og diskuterer tre viktige karakterer: Johannes, representasjonen av Hitler og Elsa. Dette involverer diskusjon om sjangrene brukt i de ulike verkene og hvordan dette påvirker historien. I delen som handler om Elsas karakter blir "Postmemory" også diskutert, ettersom dette er en viktig del av hennes karakter. Deretter har jeg konklusjonen hvor jeg oppsummerer de viktigste punktene som ble skrevet i Bacheloren. Konklusjonen forblir at skribentenes personlige forhold til krigen faktisk former deres arbeid.

In this Bachelor Thesis, I have formulated the thesis statement “Waititi’s and Leunens’ personal relationships to the war have shaped Jojo Rabbit and Caging Skies into two very different stories.” This is introduced in the introduction, where I write about the history of fiction about WWII, and then speak of Caging Skies (2004) and Jojo Rabbit (2019), the two works I am discussing. Further I define the term Postmemory before starting to analyse and discuss the movie and the book. The analysis consists of three parts, where I analyse and discuss three major characters: Johannes, the representation of Hitler, and Elsa. This involves discussion of the genre used in the different works and how this affects the story. While speaking of Elsa’s character, Postmemory is also discussed, as it is an important part of the discussion of her character. Finally, I conclude the paper, and sum up major points made throughout the BA. The conclusion is that the writers’ personal relationships to the war and their motivations does in fact shape their works.
