Fantastic Crimes and Where to Find Them: Exploring the Social Context of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Abstract

Det oppstår visse ulikheter av avgjørelser når litteratur skal transformeres til film. Hva bør det legges større vekt på av i forhold til det originale litterære verket, og hva kan man utelate? Adaptasjon av litterære verk kan derfor være en utfordrende oppgave med varierende grad av nærhet til det originale verket. Denne avhandlingen vil først diskutere Geoffrey Wagners tre kategorier av adaptasjoner og hvordan dette forholder seg til filmen og manuskriptet til Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016). For det andre vil jeg diskutere Bill Nichols’ sosiale kontekst og hvordan dette forholder seg til kriminalitet i adaptasjonene. Videre vil jeg bruke dette til å forklare systemet av klassisme og rasisme gjennom det magiske hierarkiet ved å diskutere magiske dyr og karakterer som skildres i Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016). Elementet av kriminalitet kan ytterligere bidra til å illustrere effekten av empati med visse karakterer og stille kritiske spørsmål ved lederskap.

Through medial transposition from transforming literature to the screen, certain difficulties regarding decisions arise. What should be considered more critical of the original work of literature, and what can be left out? Literary adaptations can thus be a difficult task with varying degrees of closeness. This thesis will first discuss Geoffrey Wagner’s three categories of adaptations and how they relate to the film and screenplay adaptations of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016). Secondly, I will discuss the social context according to Bill Nichols and how that relates to criminality within the adaptations. This I will use to explain the system of classism and racism of the magical hierarchy through magical beasts and characters found within Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016). The element of criminality can further help illustrate its effect on empathising with certain characters and critically questioning leadership.
