Abstract

Denne masteroppgåva tar for seg romanen New York 2140 av forfattaren Kim Stanley Robinson. Utgangspunktet er teori om science fiction, bygardsromanen, økokritikk, utopi og finansfiksjon. Oppgåva prøv å svare på om romanen er suksessrik finanskritikk. Som ein del av dette, omhandlar den og framstillinga av natur og utopi i romanen. Oppgåva konkluderer at romanen fungera som finanskritikk, då den både kritisera, og vis alternativ til, finanskapitalismen.

This master’s thesis deals with the novel New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson. Its point of departure is theory on science fiction, the apartment novel, ecocriticism, utopia, and finance fiction. The thesis attempts to answer whether the novel is an example of successful criticism of finance. As a part of this, it deals with the depiction of nature and utopia in the novel. The thesis concludes that the novel is successfully critical, as it both criticizes, and presents alternatives to, financial capitalism.
