Abstract

Diskriminering og undertrykkelse av døve personer er ikke et nytt fenomen. Formålet med denne oppgaven er å vise hvordan ulike institusjoner i Norge fremdeles utfører audisme. Begrepet audisme brukes for å skildre hvordan døve personer opplever diskriminering på grunnlag av en tanke om at personer med hørsel har høyere rang enn de uten hørsel. For å vise dette tar oppgaven for seg problemstillingen: «Hva er audisme, og utføres det institusjonell audisme ved å nekte døve å donere blod, legge ned døveskolene og avvikle botilbudet ved deltidsopplæringen hos Statped?». For å søke svar på problemstillingen gjennomfører oppgaven en litteraturgjennomgang med sentrale begreper og teori knyttet til audismen. Denne teorien blir koblet mot en lengre diskusjonsdel som tar for seg eksemplene som finnes i problemstillingen. Med utgangspunkt i diskusjonen konkluderer oppgaven med funn av institusjonell covert audisme, som skildrer hvordan institusjoner i Norge utfører audisme systematisk på en mer skjult måte.

Discrimination and oppression of deaf people is not a new phenomenon. The purpose of this thesis is to show how different institutions in Norway still practices audism. The term audism is used to describe how deaf people experience discrimination based on the idea that people with hearing have a higher rank than those without hearing. To show this, the thesis addresses the research question: “What is audism, and is institutional audism practiced by refusing deaf people to donate blood, closing down deaf schools and liquidating the housing offer for part-time education at Statped?”. To seek answers to the research question, the thesis conducts a literature review with key concepts and theory related to audism. This theory is linked to a longer discussion section that addresses the examples found in the research question. Based on the discussion, the thesis concludes with findings of institutional covert audism, which depicts how institutions in Norway practices audism systematically in a more hidden way.
