Exploring Class and Gender Roles in the fiction of Sally Rooney

Abstract

Masteroppgaven ser nærmere på innvirkningen av kjønn og klasse i moderne Irland gjennom Sally Ronneys "Mr Salary" (2017), Conversations with Friends (2017) og Normal People (2018). De foregår alle i Irland, hvilket er hvorfor oppgaven bruker utlvagte verk av James Joyce for å se sammenhenger mellom Irland da og nå. Imidlertidig ligger hovedfokuset på Rooneys verk og hvordan disse portretterer kjønn og klasse blant unge voksne i Irland i det 21. århundre.

The thesis takes a closer look at the impact of gender and class in modern-day Ireland through Sally Rooney’s works “Mr Salary” (2017), Conversations with Friends (2017) and Normal People (2018). They are all set in Ireland; therefore, the thesis uses the writings of James Joyce to draw comparison between Ireland then and now. However, the main focus is on Rooney’s works, and how they illustrate gender and class among young adults in Ireland in the twenty-first century.
