Fused deposition modeling (FDM) has recently been of growing interesting industry and amongst consumers. However, it has still to see widespread usage for structural components. This thesis seeks to benchmark the discrete element method (DEM) which recently seeing applications in simulation of fibrous structures. The numerical model will be benchmarked in the context of comparing conventional planar FDM with the niche field of curved layer FDM.
Abaqus and Python programming is used in conjunction to establish numerical models to apply DEM to FDM printed structures. Emphasis is put on investigating the how the staircase effect is captured for DEM models compared to regular solid models.
It is found that the DEM model is able to capture the difference between planar and curved layer FDM to a higher degree than solid models.
