Abstract
Two dynamic-semi-analytic-lumped-multi-element models were proposed by Hovda 2019 to minimize the axial vibrations involved in a drilling operation. One for when the drill bit is on bottomand one for when the drill bit is off bottom. The latter has been used as the basis for this projectand an attempt was made to experimentally verify this model. This model proposes an optimaltripping curve for the drill-string with respect to the eigenfrequency of the system. The procedure entails lowering the drill-string with constant acceleration to a predefined maximum velocityand then being decelerated at the same rate. The acceleration and deceleration periods are equaland no constant velocity exists in between. A large-scale experimental infrastructure situated atNTNU-Petroleumsteknisk-senter laboratory was employed to experimentally verify the optimaltripping curve. The experimental setup consists of a 66 meters cased whole alongside the drill-string, Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA), associated sensors, and a programmable motor at the topto generate the desired curve. According to the model, when the acceleration time is set to theperiod of the first eigenfrequency of the system, there exists a sweet spot with the least vibrations. In other words, the model predicts the fastest lowering curve with the least vibrations. However, the experimental results show that this ”optimal tripping curve” happens at a longer accelerationand deceleration period than proposed by the model. The difference is likely to be as a result ofconsidering the top-side structure and engine as a rigid system with no vibrations which is notthe case in the experimental setup and to a lower extent, it vibrates alongside the drill-string.
