dc.description.abstract | Since the introduction of smartphones, there has been a massive rise in mobile users. At the same time, low levels of physical activity is becoming a problem. The goal of this project is to develop a concept for a location-based mobile game that helps promote physical activity and social well-being for students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). A user-centered approach with design workshops attended by students was utilized when developing the concept. Furthermore, a prototype was developed based on data gathered from the workshops and later tested by students on campus.
From the results of user testing, it was investigated how different elements in a location-based mobile game can help motivate physical activity and social interaction among players. It was found that, aided by location services and an in-application map screen, placing different tasks around campus can help motivate physical activity by forcing players to walk in-between the locations. These tasks were based on cooperation and required all players to participate, something that was found to positively affect social interaction among them. Furthermore, elements such as a reward system and time limit were found to make players more competitive and engaged in the activity, reinforcing cooperation and social interactions.
