Redesigning the NTNU Oria Digital University Library: NTNU User-centered Digital University Library

Abstract

Et godt og pålitelig digitalt bibliotek er avgjørende, spesielt i en vanskelig situasjon som COVID-19-pandemien. Under disse omstendighetene er det utfordrende å få tilgang til de fysiske bibliotekene, og det eneste alternativet er å bruke de digitale. Å lage et brukersentrert design er veldig viktig, spesielt når det gjelder offentlige og akademiske institusjoner, som NTNU-universitetet, fordi det vil være forskjellige typer brukere som vil bruke de offentlige plattformene, spesielt det digitale biblioteket. Med dette er det viktig å legge merke til, ikke bare de normale og vanlige brukerne av det digitale biblioteket, men også de med nedsatt funksjonsevne - spesielt de som er fargeblinde, som ikke kan identifisere objekter godt, og brukerne med dysleksi. Dermed er det riktig å velge riktige farger, riktig bruk av webhierarki, ordne og organisere elementene, komponentene og objektene på nettstedet for å sikre at det akademiske nettstedet kan imøtekomme alle typer brukere innenfor eller utenfor institusjonen.

A good and reliable digital library is very crucial especially in a difficult situation like the COVID19 pandemic. During these circumstances, it is challenging to access the physical libraries, thus the only option is to use the digital ones. NTNU digital library wants help from the design students to improve its websites. The current NTNU digital library is being managed by various sectors. The only component that is working in the website right now is the Oria search system. Oria is a ready-made and -designed search system layout which provides academic databases and materials for academic institutions, especially universities and colleges; which makes Oria an important tool for students, researchers, staff, and the like. However, the current design of NTNU digital library and NTNU Oria is a little challenging due to its lack of focus when it comes to universal design laws and regulations, making the website complicated and the information being presented are a bit hard to understand. This is where we, the Bachelor in Web development, fits in the picture where we are able to apply and share our knowledge through prototype redesigning of the NTNU digital library during our 3-year course at NTNU Gjøvik.
