The dramaturgical function is one of the most important things that comes from the music. A melody can disappear for a new one to fade in to give a feeling of a new room and a new time, as Børmark says. It creates interest in the characters and it guides the audience via the melody and expectations. The expectations are often created by what you associate with the music that comes as e.g. A banjo guitar will create a folky mood for most of the audience. So one can also break expectations to create surprises. The music becomes the extra stage in a play and in the secret garden, the music and the sound complement in such a way that it makes a big difference due to its mystery in Rødstrupen (something that would never have come out so well without the songs she sings with the echo coated the tones), the uncertainty about Craven (one would probably have felt that he would have been a little scary without the music as well, but his depth with the nostalgia and longing he has for his wife is forced out because of the waltz, which is often associated with dance and good humor) and the magic of the garden that forces an emotional impact due to its unorthodox pace and rhythm in relation to the strict life in the house.
