Vikingtidens mektige dronninger eller vikingtidens mektige elitekvinner?

Abstract

Målet i denne oppgaven har vært å analysere og undersøke fremstillingen av de historiske skikkelsene Gunnhild kongsmor og Dronning Astrid. Gjennom problemstillingen Hva var det som gjorde en dronning til en dronning, og kan vi si at våre norske dronninger under vikingtiden var dronninger? har jeg drøftet og sammenlignet ulike krav som sagaene og europeiske idealer stiller til dronninger, deres fremstillinger og dens troverdighet. For å få et så tilfredsstillende svar som mulig har jeg anvendt to metoder i undersøkelsen. Først kritisk analyse av sagaer og deretter komparativ metode. Jeg har drøftet både likheter og forskjeller mellom ulike dronninger, både i Norge og Europa, i lys av Jørgensen og Staffords krav. Dronningenes grunnlag for makt har også blitt diskutert, og kirkens tradisjoner og skikkers påvirkning på ekteskapet og kongemakten. Jeg konkluderte med at kravene for en dronning er ulik i Norge og i resten av Europa, og at vi, i lys av de europeiske idealene, ikke kan kalle Gunnhild og Astrid for dronninger.

The goal for this assignment has been to analyze and examine the portrayal of the historic figures Gunnhild Kingsmother and Queen Astrid. With the thesis What was it that made a queen into a queen, and can we say that our Norwegian queens during the Viking Age were queens? I have debated and compared the different requirements that the Norse Sagar and European ideals place on a queen, their figuration and its trustworthiness. To get the most satisfying answer as possible I have applied to methods in the study. Firstly, critical analysis of the sagas and then comparative method. I have debate both similarities and differences between different queens, both in Norway and Europe, in the light of Jørgensen and Stafford’s criteria. The queen base for power have also been discussed, and the church’s traditions and customs influence on the marriage and royal power. I concluded that the requirements for queens are different between Norway and the rest of Europe, and that we, in the light of European ideals, cannot call Gunnhild and Astrid for queens
