Vikingtidens mektige dronninger eller vikingtidens mektige elitekvinner?
Abstract
The goal for this assignment has been to analyze and examine the portrayal of the historicfigures Gunnhild Kingsmother and Queen Astrid. With the thesis What was it that made a queeninto a queen, and can we say that our Norwegian queens during the Viking Age were queens?I have debated and compared the different requirements that the Norse Sagar and Europeanideals place on a queen, their figuration and its trustworthiness. To get the most satisfyinganswer as possible I have applied to methods in the study. Firstly, critical analysis of the sagasand then comparative method. I have debate both similarities and differences between differentqueens, both in Norway and Europe, in the light of Jørgensen and Stafford’s criteria. The queenbase for power have also been discussed, and the church’s traditions and customs influence onthe marriage and royal power. I concluded that the requirements for queens are differentbetween Norway and the rest of Europe, and that we, in the light of European ideals, cannotcall Gunnhild and Astrid for queens
