Psykoedukativ undervisning om biopsykososial mestring av fødselssmerter for kvinner med fødselsangst - utvikling, utprøving og resultater

Background: Many women suffer from fear of childbirth (FOC). FOC may have negative effects on both mother and child before, during and after the birth. This makes it important to develop effective treatment strategies for women with FOC. Purpose: Fear of pain is a central component in FOC. Psychoeducation based on a biopsychosocial model of pain management is well established within interdisciplinary treatment of long term pain conditions as a way for developing positive strategies for coping with such pain. This intervention has so far not been tried out as treatment for FOC. Methods: This master thesis consists of three studies: a) developing a psychoeducative course on biopsychosocial coping of childbirth pain, b) testing the course on a group of women with fear of childbirth and c) describing the group changes in scores on FOC, expectations of pain in the forthcoming birth and thoughts about their own pain management in general after participation in the course. Results and conclusions: Biopsychosocial coping of childbirth pain can be the basis for a psychoeducative course for women with fear of childbirth. The participants rated the course highly and the course was held without major challenges with regards to recruitment, organization and arrangement. They showed reduced levels of FOC, lower expectations of childbirth pain and less catastrophic thinking about pain in general. The results are promising, but due to a small sample size and lack of control of potentially confounding variables, no conclusions can be drawn from the changes. Research should focus on further developing this kind of psychoeducation and examine the effects on fear of childbirth in general and fear of childbirth pain more specifically.
