The main theme of this master thesis "My music – communication of feelings or evidence of achievement?" is the implementation of a new curriculum in the main qualification area for ”communication” in music major i high school. I have chosen to examine this from a teacher's perspective, looking at both the implementation process and the content of the subject as defined by the new curriculum. How teachers understand their subject (music) after the introduction of the curriculum reform called Knowledge Promotion (Ministry of Education and Research, www.regjeringen.no, 2006), and more comprehensively how the implementation of a new curriculum takes place. The ethical perspectives in the study is handled among others through looking after the integrity of the research participants according to good research standards. The project is approved by NSD (Norwegian Social Science Data Services).
The main research questions for the thesis is: How is the curriculum Knowledge Promotion implemented in the main qualification area “communication” in the subject music major in high school? I have investigated the main research question through the two research questions 1. Which themes in the interview with the teachers can be identified in connection to the teaching of “communication”? and 2. What does the curriculum Knowledge Promotion say about “communication” as an area of competence in music major in high school?
The theoretical framing of the thesis focuses on concepts as implementation, curriculum theory and aesthetic learning processes. I have chosen a focus group interview as the method to generate empirical data for the study. I conducted an interview with ten teachers from five high schools. The categorization tool used for analysis of the interview is based on Bjørndal and Lieberg’s (1978) so called didactics relational model. The discussion presents a critique of this model, though, through an alternative way of looking at the implementation of the curriculum under study.
The result shows that the teachers have built a new practice based on their past experiences to find pragmatic solutions for teaching the subject, despite the varying information and central guidance concerning the implementation of the new in this curriculum. Another aspect of the study is that it opens up the question of whether the terms “aesthetic learning processes” and “interdisciplinary arts” have a place in music studies in high school. Here I suggest that there is a potential for change and development in the gap between local practices and an overall understanding of the national scientific community for music in high school. In the analysis of the empirical material, also signals of a lack of available continuing education appear. As a conclusion I suggest that an important challenge is to strengthen the teaching community’s dialogues about learning and teaching “communication” in music as a school subject, and to allow the teacher themselves to be understood as qualified agents of change within their own field.
