Sammendrag
In this thesis I wanted to gain more understanding about how parents and advisors experiences parental guidance. The subject is relevant for increasing the parents’ competency in interaction with children, in line with earlier efforts to strengthen children’s and young people’s competency. Which challenges do the parents and advisors face? What kind of competence is required to create quality in the parental guidance? Through this dual matter I will have a closer look at the ICDP – program training. From the theoretical perspective I have looked at guidance as a phenomenon, where I focus on the advisor’s need for competency in the guidance. Knowledge and meaning is created in the relation between the advisor and parents. Through sharing of everyday stories and reflection about them, more understanding is created. This helps the parents to master the interaction with the children.

Main findings in my thesis shows that parents and advisors faces different challenges in this kind of guidance. I have interviewed advisors and parents to hear about their experience with the parental guidance. The interviews contained of focus group interviews and in-depthinterviews, and through these forms of interviews I have collected different perspectives to enlighten the theme of my study.

In the survey I can see parents and advisors facing different forms of challenges in this kind of guidance. In parental guidance the parents will feel vulnerable when telling about private situations. The advisors express a wish for more guidance competency within certain areas of ICDP. With a stronger focus on the role of the advisors, the ICDP training will make the advisors more confident about how to lead the parental guidance.
