dc.description.abstractThe single child and their lives is a big concern in the Chinese society. This study explores the everyday life of boarding high school students on their schooling, study pressure, leisure time and other activities. I sought to find out how the students use their time at school; how the social changes affect the students in their daily lives; and try to understand how study pressure is influencing students‘ everyday lives and what the students think and talk about it. A total of 39 students and 15 adults were involved in the fieldwork, mainly from two boarding high schools. The mixed methods have been used. Boarding school is the place for students not only studying activities but also for having meals, sleeping and other activities. The school starts early and ends late every day, and all activities have been organized strictly by the school. Meanwhile, lots of negative news can be found about the new generation in the media. Teachers and parents seem to have different views on study pressure and the children‘s future than the students themselves; urging them to work harder and harder. In that sense, the material in this thesis illustrates a huge gap between the amount of work and effort students feel they make at school and the social and cultural images that are constructed about them as a ―spoiled generation‖.nb_NO
