Aim: The aim of this study is to explore nurse’s experiences with terminal care in nursing homes, to clarify how to give high quality care for this group of patients. Method: The assignment is built as a systematic literature study to identify, quality check and analyze research articles on the subject. Eight research articles were found through advanced systematic searches in three separate databases. To analyze the findings, we used Evan’s method of analysis. Results: Through the analysis we found four themes which is important for terminal care in nursing homes. These are the importance of good symptom relief to terminally ill patients, holistic care, supporting the relatives of the dying patient and that good terminal care requires planning. Conclusion: The findings of our study concludes that all four themes must be addressed for the nurses to be able to provide good terminal care. End of life care is a demanding task, which requires expertise. More research should be done on the nurses’ experience, as well as factors that promotes and inhibits the terminal care to increase competence in the field.
