dc.description.abstract | Against the background of increased emphasis on patient autonomy within medicine, in the second half of the 1900s there emerged a debate about the definition of “futile” treatment. This term may be interpreted in different ways, for instance physiologically, qualitatively, quantitatively or socially. Hence, the futility debate has proved to be multi-faceted, and no consensus with regard to the definition has been achieved. As concerns the palliative cancer patient, futile treatment can be seen in light of the so-called Four principles of health care ethics, as well as in view of each patient’s values, hopes, and conception of what meaning in life amounts to.
